When to Compromise?

Thursday, September 22, 2005

Design must be skeletoned by theories and feasible analysis.
Form must be supported by structure.
This is a platform where every designer should be standing.
It is simple to generate a form yet so difficult to maintain the intial form generated when it comes with structure and feasibility studies which a 8 by 8 constrain forces the form to rigidity.
It is difficult to break away from rigidity where it is so logical, simple, feasible and reasonable.

How do I not compromise with rigidity?

We need fresh air.
We need something that is different.
Just like taking in fresh air.
Something fresh.
Something different.
Sometimes we just need an escape from normal daily life.

Do we spent more time and efford on getting the form structured or do we compromise and use a matured 8 X 8 structure?

My lecturer and professor and collegues stated simplicity.
Being different without any supportive reason might be immature.
We do not want our client to suffer because of that, wouldn't you?
Can I state Architecture,a rational art?

Are you dying out of Ideas?

Ideas comes mainly through analysis.
We observe the site, the surroundings, the climate, everything and anything that can possibly provide clues or even constrains that later can be transformed into ideas and character of that particular building.
Every type of building has it's own character; hotel are suppose to deal with customers which focuses more with rooms, efficiency and lobby spaces; stadiums are mainly focusing on human circulation, view studies and building structure, houses and residential bungalows are more on individual understanding towards living and taste where you can explore a bit more; retail and shopping mall are typical spaces with ventilation and light going throuhout the buying circulation path inplemented with signages and icons. High rise residential are more towards building efficiency with simple, functional layout incollaborating with everyday's living.
Therefore, after understanding the character of the building, look at the others' work. Do case study. A simple way is just by modification or even combination of forms and ideas. I agrees that forms follow functions. An old yet useful term.
We can use whatever form we want, but it should incorporate with functions. It is to what I am believing now.
After the planning process and simple 3d form study and sketches, we then go ahead in detailing the plans, elevations. Sometimes, modeling helps alot.
It depends again on the initial environment or clue that we have or what we have studied.
Design is simple. Strong concept comes with rationality. Less is more, forms follow functions. I still lives in old theories. Why? Because it works in the developing countries. Only the rich can afford 'expansive ideas'.

Stage 2 adjustment

Saturday, September 10, 2005

Spent a day on omni light study, material transparency study and material study.
Should add on signage on frontage, change material on shading louvres into lumber and add omni to change building feeling into much warmer feel. Guess what is this building about!

Stage 1 modeling

After a nights' modeling, the result is amazing. Though still lots to improve.
On glazing transparency part, lighting and material advancement.
